Game start and field size

To start a game, you need to invite an opponent or wait until you are invited. If you invite the opponent, the game is being played on the opponent’s settings. If your opponent invited you, the game is being played on your settings.

The field size according to the game rules is 39 dots in width and 32 dots in height. The field size is equal to the size of the standard sheet of exercise book. You can choose the field size and other options in the application settings.

Start position

At the beginning of the game on the field there are several dots that are called a start position. However, the game can begin with an empty field. Start position makes the game more interesting. Most often in the beginning of the game there are 4 dots on the field. Such start position is called a crossing and is denoted as X (figure 1). The start position can contain 2 crossings standing together (denoted as 2X) (figure 2). The start position can contain 4 crossings with distance from each other (denoted as 4X) (figure 3).

The game process and the end of the game

You play by red or blue dots against a single opponent. The moves are made alternately. Players put the dots to the line intersections. Placed dots cannot be moved during a game. In the game you should capture the dots of your opponent and not let him capture your dots. The winner is the player who captured more dots. The game ends with a draw when players captured an equal number of dots.

The game ends in such cases:

  • no free spaces on the field;
  • a player surrenders;
  • both players agree to end in a draw;
  • a player connects his dots to the field edge and you can't encircle them (this is called a landing);
  • a player lost his time for game and he loses.

Options of the game rules

Standard rules: the field size is 39x32, the start position is the crossing (X), the landing is enabled, no additional move after new encirclement, the field territory is not taken into account, no handicap and no immediate win.

In the game with additional move after creating new encirclement the player who makes the new encirclement is given the opportunity to make additional move.

In the game for the territory not only the number of captured dots, but also the area of encirclements is taken into account. The game for the territory is common among Polish players.

The game without landing rule continues until there are empty places on the game field. Such game can end also in a draw or with the end of time or when a player surrenders.

In a game with a handicap of 0.5 dots (as in the game go) the player who makes the second move, gets 0.5 dots of handicap. The player who makes the first move, obtains the right of the first move.

In the game with immediate win the game ends when player gets an advantage of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 dots, depending on settings.
